What Makes a Good Backlink?

There are multiple elements of what's considered a good backlink. For instance, there's the anchor text, which is the text that shows up for the link that points back to your site.

In the past, content creators would simply write "click here" or "learn more here" as the anchor text. However, this is a bit generic and doesn't say what the link relates to.

As a rule of thumb, it's better for your anchor text to be relevant to the link. For example, it can say "50% of Americans are obese" and it points back to a resource on your page with a study showing this to be true.

Or you can have a name of one of your products as the anchor text that links to your product page.

A bad practice is to misguide the user into thinking the link is something it isn't. If other sites do this, then it'll increase your bounce rate (an indicator that your site is irrelevant, thus leading to its de-ranking).

The Purpose of Backlinks

Besides building your SEO ranking, backlinks are a way of connecting together the world wide web. Not only does linking to a site show love, but it helps your users find more information or products/services they're searching for.

A site with no links (internal or external) isn't going to rank well in search engines. Nor is it going to help its visitors in any relevant way.

A backlink to Google and other search engines is a form of social proof. If a site is willing to direct its traffic there, then it's vouching for that site.

If you're getting a lot of backlinks for high-quality sources, then this tells Google that you're a trusted site and deserves a higher ranking.

This is why you'll find Wikipedia at the top of most searches. It has a ton of links pointing to resources and a lot of sites link to it as a resource.

If you can turn your site or blog into an information hub that resonates with your audience, then you can become just as popular but within your niche.

The Nofollow Attribute

Since you're new to link building, it's important to know about the nofollow attribute. Some site owners apply this to links, which tells Google not to pass any PageRank for that link.

In other words, it won't help the target URLs site ranking. You can identify this tag in the code, which looks like this: YourSite.

This is commonly found on sites that have little control over the links added to its site. For example, forums, or comment sections of a blog.

These site owners don't want to give URLs a vote of confidence when they have no idea what the site's about.

It also prevents the site from getting spammed with links. This is a common practice by site owners who link to their own site in blog comments to get link juice.

The Benefits of Page Link Building

Again, link building isn't all about SEO. It can also help you build your brand and great relationships in your industry. In many cases, site owners generate backlinks by writing guest blog posts for other sites.

In order to do this, you have to establish a relationship with those in your industry. Preferably those with the same or similar audience to yours. Remember, your backlinks should point from a site that's relevant and high-authority.

While you may not be able to get a guest post on a super high-authority site in the beginning, you can still target sites that have domain authority that's higher than your own.

Guest blog posts include a link back to your site either somewhere in the content or at the end in the call to action. Some prefer you to have a link in your author bio profile box at the bottom of each post.

Creating a Strong Backlink Profile

Quality page link building is critical to your site's ranking. Keywords alone aren't enough to get your site ranked high on Google and other search engines.
